Dr. Pauline Wallin is a psychologist an author of the book “Taming Your Inner Brat.” And she says we get worked up over these things because we can’t control them. And it’s harder to tolerate minor annoyances when you don’t know when they’re going to end. So here are some of her tips on how to avoid sweating the small stuff, courtesy of Glamour magazine:
First: Control how you react. Stressing over how AWFUL the situation is only makes it worse. But reminding yourself that others are in the same boat, or that things could be worse – helps minimize your anxiety.
Next: Always remember that you have options. You CAN choose to leave a long line, or tell your neighbors to turn down the loud music. Even if you don’t take action, just knowing that you can will help calm you down.
And finally: to avoid sweating the small stuff, pull your mental escape hatch.
That means take your mind off the situation. If you’re being delayed, use the time to read, daydream or make out a mental to-do list. Anything that distracts you from an annoying situation will help soothe your frazzled nerves.
