What’s the germiest thing in most kitchens? Surprisingly, it’s not the usual suspects like the kitchen sink or table.
It’s actually the refrigerator water dispenser.
That’s according to a new study by the National Sanitation Foundation.
Researchers tested swab samples from kitchens across North America. And discovered that many common kitchen items are plastered in dangerous bacteria.
For example, the refrigerator water dispenser was the dirtiest germ spot, and often covered with enough yeast and mold to cause severe allergic reactions and respiratory issues in most people.
Another surprising kitchen germ hot-spot? Blenders. Experts explain that the smoothie craze is causing more people than ever to hop on the blender bandwagon and whip up their own drinks. The only problem is that most people only wash the glass container, not the whole appliance. Allowing germs to fester on the blades.
Also, the study found that most rubber spatulas and can openers were tainted with traces of E.coli, salmonella and listeria. Which can cause diarrhea, fever and death.
So, if you’re suddenly feeling the urge to spring clean, you may want to focus on some of the not-so-usual suspects.
