Your body could be giving off huge warning signs that you’re a stress case. And when stress becomes chronic and out of control, it can wreck your health. So, here are a few physical symptoms of stress to beware of:

  • Hair loss. Severe stress – like the death of someone close to you, a divorce, job loss or even a break up – can result in hair loss a couple months later. That’s because the stress can trigger hormone changes that disrupt the growth cycle of hair. The result could be bald patches, thinning hair, sometimes even alopecia – or complete hair loss, even in women. The good news is that the condition usually corrects itself once your stress levels go back to normal. But when the stress-induced hair loss is really severe, only 1-in-10 people typically get their hair back.

  • Nosebleeds. A lot of people get nosebleeds after intense situations, like an argument, due to spikes in blood pressure. The fix? Drink 3 cups of hibiscus tea a day. Studies show it can lower blood pressure by 7 points.

  • Misplacing your smartphone. That could be stress related too. That’s because chronic stress floods the area of the brain responsible for short-term memory with the stress hormone cortisol. Figuring out – and dealing with – the root cause of your stress is the best way to get your memory back. In the meantime, experts suggest writing down what you need to remember. Because when we write things down, it enters our memory two ways – so we’re more likely to store the information.

  • Sweating buckets! When we're stressed out, we excrete a different kind of sweat than when we’re hot or exercising. Yoga and meditation can help reduce stress-related sweating. And if you can get it under control, you may be helping more than just yourself. A study found that stress-sweat can give off certain signals that people around you can detect, causing them to be stressed out as well.

So, if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s time to figure out the root of your stress and take the necessary steps to minimize it before it completely wrecks your health.
