A lot of companies are hurting right now, but one business that’s actually booming is online dating. It may not sound logical, because North Americans are cutting way back on expenses, especially for social activities. However, according to The New York Times, times may be tough, but loneliness is loneliness, no matter how much money you have in the bank. Match.com just had its strongest quarter in the last seven years. So, here are three reasons why online dating is recession-proof:
- First, it’s expensive to go out to clubs every weekend hoping to meet “The One.” Plus, there are more fish in the online pond than there are in a nightclub. Sure a lot of people meet potential mates through friends and family, too. However, that’s a pretty small dating pool, especially as you get older. Online, everyone’s single – unless they lied in their profile, and you can churn through dozens of prospects - rejecting those that won’t work – without having to make small talk with people you don’t really like.
- Online dating is also cost-effective. You can tell how compatible someone is just by looking over their profile. A few emails, instant messages, or phone calls can help you decide whether the two of you “click” enough to spend the time and money to meet in person.
- It gives you a leg up in the “creative date” department. In other words, once you read a person’s profile, you already know their likes and dislikes, and can come up with an inexpensive way to get to know each other. For example, maybe their profile says: Enjoys museums, nature hikes, and exotic coffee bars. So, your suggestion of a trip to the Natural History Museum, with a stop at a brand new coffee house will be right up their alley. That’s still cheaper than dinner and a movie.
