Here’s an easy way to improve your mood: Spend less time on Facebook. That’s because new research shows that too much Facebooking makes you unhappy.

Why? Well, according to the Society for Personality and Social Psychologists, there are two factors at play. First, it’s human nature to compare ourselves to our peers. Also, most people put the best possible spin on their Facebook posts, and the more friends you have, the more updates you see. So, reading a long list of “positive posts” by others makes us discount our own achievements and feel bad about our lives. In fact, the same study found that the people with the most friends feel depressed by facebook most often!

This doesn’t mean you should close your Facebook account. You just have to put what you’re reading in perspective, and remember that people tend to exaggerate when they’re online. 

You should also limit the amount of time you spend on social media in general. In fact, psychologist Dr. Leonard Sax believes that teens should log only about a half hour a day. And, adults who spend more than an hour a day on Facebook should consider using some of that time to meet their friends in person. Because interacting with real people is a real mood-booster.
