Are we witnessing the decline of men?
That’s a question posed recently by former Secretary of Education William J. Bennett, who wrote The Book of Man. He says for the first time in history, women are better educated, more ambitious, and more successful than men.
For example: Over the past 40 years, the number of women earning college degrees grew, while the number of men earning degrees fell 17% percent. Also, while the number of women with jobs has surpassed men, the number of men who are unemployed has quadrupled! And when it comes to fatherhood, statistics show that at least 1-in-4 Dads today live apart from their kids.
Bennett says it’s no wonder so many women ask questions like: “Where have all the good men gone?”
So why is this happening? Experts say one problem is that boys are hearing mixed messages from the media about what it means to “be a man.” For example: Movies and TV shows portray guys who avoid relationships at all costs, and video games teach a “street gang” mentality, that’s all about swagger, without any responsibility.
Bennett also believes the problem boils down to a decline in our basic virtues.
Like work, marriage and even religion - since women are also more likely to attend church. He says our founding fathers would never have tolerated this, because they believed industriousness, marriage and religion were the basic marks of “real men.”
That’s why Bennett says it’s time for today’s men to man up!
