When Canadian researchers tracked over 69,000 emergency room visits over a two year span, they found that heart attacks and strokes were 27% more likely to happen on a patient’s birthday!
Even scarier: For people with high blood pressure, the odds of a b-day heart problem were increased by 88%! And it’s not just the baby boomers and seniors who need to worry. The effect held true for all age groups. So the question is why. Well, according to Prevention magazine, birthdays are stressful. The extra attention you get, the socializing, the heightened emotions, and the over-indulging can stress out your body. And when your stress hormones rise, you have an increased risk of clotting in the blood.
So if you have a birthday coming up – and you already have high blood pressure or high cholesterol - you should avoid excess physical exertion or exercise on and around your birthday. The strenuous activity during an already stressful time for your body could push things over the edge.
Also, don’t drink excessive alcohol, and make sure you stick to your medication schedule. You don’t want to be blowing out the last birthday candles you’ll ever get.
