It hurts your feelings, it hurts your wallet. And makes you feel like a loser. But even if they told you it was because of "down-sizing", your performance may still have played a part in the decision as to who stays, and who gets the boot. BusinessWeek Magazine recently listed the 4 most common reasons people get fired.
- Number one on the list for why people get fired is attitude! Maybe you made it obvious you really didn't want to be there, through your words, your actions, even your facial expressions. At work, you're often judged more by your behavior, than by your performance.
- Reason #2: You were the first one out the door every night. Of course, it's not good to be married to your job, but when it's crunch time, your boss has to feel confident that you'll stick around til the job is done.
- You opened your mouth about looking for another job. Absolutely do not share your intentions with co-workers unless you're willing to have it get back to your boss, 'cuz it will. Go look for another job, but keep it to yourself until you are willing to make it public, to everyone.
- Reason #4: You gossiped about your boss and your co-workers. This is one of the most destructive habits you can have, and we've all been guilty of it at one time or another. But people quickly learn that if you're always bad mouthing other people, eventually you'll get around to them!
Avoid those pitfalls and you just might avoid a pink slip one day.
