Can’t sleep? Got heartburn? What about a headache? Before you pop a pill, look in your kitchen! Here are the foods that can cure a few common ailments:
For a sleepless night, eat kiwi! Researchers found that people who ate two kiwis an hour before bed fell asleep 14 minutes faster than non-kiwi eaters. They also slept longer and better. That’s because kiwi boosts levels of sleep-inducing serotonin.
If you’re prone to migraines – pop some pumpkin seeds, which are also called “pepitas.” They’re one of the top sources of magnesium. And studies show that people with frequent migraines often have low levels of magnesium. Researchers believe the lack of magnesium constricts blood vessels around the brain, causing head pain. You can get about half the magnesium you need a day in a quarter cup of pumpkin seeds.
Beans can prevent heartburn! A study in the journal Gut found that people who eat a high-fiber diet are 20 percent less likely to have heartburn or acid reflux. That’s because fiber moves food out of the stomach faster, so it can’t sit there creating the excess acid that causes heartburn. And beans are the top food source for fiber.
If you hit the weights hard, and you’re paying for it, eat ginger. A study in the Journal of Pain found that weightlifters that ate two teaspoons of ginger a day had 25 percent less after-workout muscle pain. That’s because the antioxidants in ginger reduce inflammation, just like ibuprofen. And since ginger also relieves nausea and motion sickness, it’s known as the wonder root!
