Next time you go to a wedding, don’t be surprised if you see a lot of empty chairs.

A growing number of people aren’t attending weddings, simply because they’re so expensive.

In fact, a survey found that the average cost of going to a wedding is $500. That’s up nearly 60-percent in the last year alone.

And experts say that the price tag shoots up even higher for destination weddings, with pricey airline tickets, and hotel stays to factor in.

And being a bridesmaid or groomsman will jack up the price even more. The wedding site TheKnot.com found that the average bridesmaid spends $1,300 on everything from the bridesmaid dress, to the bachelorette party, to the wedding gift.

So, what should you do if you can’t afford to attend a friend or loved one’s wedding? Etiquette experts say the best policy is honesty, that way there’s no pressure or hurt feelings on either side. And tell the couple you can’t afford to attend, or be a bridesmaid or groomsman, but that you’d love to celebrate with them another time.
