Did you know you’re three TIMES more likely to become diabetic if you have high blood pressure? Since one out of every three people in North America will die of heart disease, you gotta get your blood pressure under control. So try these tricks from Woman's World magazine.

  • Soak in a bath with Epsom salts. You can get them at the drug store for $3. The key component in Epsom salts is magnesium, which is a powerful mineral that regulates hundreds of enzymes in your body. If you soak in it, the magnesium will absorb into your bloodstream – giving your body an essential weapon to knock several points off your blood pressure. Research shows that a 12 minute soak in Epsom salts will raise your body’s magnesium level by 35 percent.

  • Eat more baked potatoes with the skin intact because potato skins are a key source of potassium, which is another mineral proven to relax blood vessels. In fact, one study found that eight out of 10 people on blood pressure medication needed only HALF the regular dosage – as long as they ate at least one spud a day! The good stuff is in the skin.  

  • Clean your house on the weekend. One study found that doing four hours of household chores two days in a row takes at least eight POINTS off your blood pressure. Why? Well, any moderate exercise will help you stay healthy, but researchers found that having a clean home reduces psychological stress too, which can help you relax even more!

  • Take more catnaps. For every 30 minutes of extra sleep you get, you’ll knock five points off your BP rate because being well rested helps your body regulate the stress hormone cortisol. The less cortisol you have in your system, the lower your blood sugar levels will be.  

  • Skip the soda. The simple act of swapping your carbonated beverages for water will eliminate gallons of sugar from your diet. Studies show it will cut your risk of high blood pressure and diabetes by a whopping 44 percent.
