Here’s a staggering statistic: 80-percent of the time we spend on the internet is wasted. If you have trouble focusing on your work or you sit down after dinner “just” to check your email, only to look up to find hours have passed, here are three computer productivity programs that could help:  

  • First: TrackTime. It runs in the background on your computer, compiling a record of the programs you use and the actions you take. For example, you may find that you’re switching between apps every few minutes or checking email 40 times an hour. And once the program helps you identify your time traps, you can take steps to avoid them.  

  • There’s also an app for people who just can’t say “no” to multitasking: It’s called Think. And it hides all the windows on your monitor, but the one you’re currently using. You can switch back and forth between your apps and windows as needed. But you’ll find it easier to focus because you won’t see distractions on your monitor, like the “ping” of new email or a news headline update.  

  • Finally: You can avoid wasting time on social networking sites with apps like Cold Turkey and Anti-Social. You can carve out specific time periods which eliminate access to Facebook and Twitter as well as YouTube and Pinterest. And studies show that people who use the apps to block social media and hobby sites save an average of three hours a DAY. Which means, installing those apps at work could be a real career saver.
