I hope you never need this intelligence, but if you do have to live through a major weather event, like a hurricane, these tips will keep your family safe:
First: If you’re asked to evacuate, GO. Officials issue warnings because they believe you’re in danger, and it’s not worth risking your life, or the lives of your family, to prove them wrong. So, pack your bags ahead of time so you can just grab them and go, and make sure you’ve got medications, extra cash, and copies of important papers, like your homeowners’ insurance policy.
If you aren’t evacuated: Your number one priority should be water. So, fill large zip-top plastic bags with water and put them in your freezer. If you lose power, they’ll help keep your food cold longer, and you’ll be able to use them for drinking water later.
Then, to help your family cope with the stress and raise their spirits, eat your meals together as a family, even if you’re sitting on boxes in your attic. And, don’t be afraid to stock up on non-perishable comfort foods, like chips and chocolate bars, because they provide a feeling of normalcy when times are tough.
