Junk food isn’t just making you fat, it’s killing you, too! Turns out the same foods that add pounds to your middle subtract years from your life! Let’s take a quick look at a few food habits that hurt you from the inside out.
#1: Fast food. Heart specialist Dr. Mehmet Oz says that not only are burgers and fries high in calories, they’re also loaded with trans fats. Trans fats damage cells and cause inflammation of the blood vessels. The fix here is simple. Avoid the drive thru, and watch out for things that have “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” oils on the label. They’re the food industry’s code words for trans fats.
Bad food habit #2: Giving in to your sweet tooth. Shawn Talbott is a nutritional biochemist. And he says that sugar slows down the body’s repair mechanism. Because too much sugar makes skin less elastic, so wrinkles show up first. But the damage goes much deeper. Over time, sugar damages your memory, weakens your hearing and has even been linked to Parkinson’s disease.
And the last food habit that hurts you from the inside out: Eating at your desk, or in the car, or while stressed in any way. Dr. Henry Lodge is coauthor of the book, Younger Next Year. And he says that mixing food with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline is damaging in two ways: First, it stops your body from absorbing key nutrients. And second, grabbing food when you’re stressed can lead to mindless eating, which packs on the pounds and wreaks havoc on your health.
