Who designed the statue of liberty?

Quick! Who designed the Statue of Liberty? If you guessed Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, you get a gold star. Our symbol for freedom has been standing in New York Harbor for 118 years. In fact, Lady Liberty was a gift from the French people in 1886, to celebrate the friendship between our two countries during the American Revolution.
But the Statue of Liberty has been closed to the public since September 11, 2001. For more than 2 years, visitors to Liberty Island haven't been allowed inside the statue. But that'll change when the Statue of Liberty reopens in late July.
The National Park Service, which runs Liberty Island, is putting the finishing touches on $7 million dollars worth of renovations, including fire suppression systems and more exits. They'll also be screening visitors like they do at airports. And to reduce long lines, they're starting a reservation system. And once again, the public will be allowed to climb the 354 steps to look out of the Statue of Liberty's crown.
So, if you plan on visiting Lady Liberty, get in shape - that's one long stairway!
