Find Out What It's Like To Be Ordained With The App Ordain Thyself
Ever wonder what it’s like to become an ordained priest, rabbi, or
swami?
Now you can find out, with a new smartphone app called Ordain Thyself. With just a few swipes of your finger, the app lets you experience mock ordinations in more than two dozen religions. It also comes with special filters that you can layer over photos, to see what you’d look like dressed as a Catholic bishop, a Hasidic Jewish rabbi, or a Hindu priest, just to name a few.
The Ordain Thyself app was created by Tony Jones, a real-life Christian minister who says he wanted to provide a fun way to learn about different world religions. He says it obviously won’t give you any legitimate religious credentials, since that usually requires years of hard work and study. And even though he believes religion is serious business, Jones says the app is not meant to be taken seriously. After all, there’s an option for becoming an ordained Klingon priest, from “Star Trek.”
Because of that, some critics are saying the app “belittles” the ordination process, and contributes to religious stereotyping.
However, we’ve also read some comments from people who say the app is inspiring deep discussions with friends about faith. And Jones says that’s the goal, to help users learn and understand more about religion.
