A lot of people think that women just aren’t funny, especially men. And they might be right.

According to a new study, men actually do take the cake when it comes to humor, but not by much. Researchers from the University of San Diego asked men and women to write funny captions to a cartoon, and then they had people rate the captions on a one to five funny-ness scale. Men were rated higher, but only by one tenth of one percent.

However, in the second part of the experiment, researchers had people say whether they thought the funny or unfunny caption was most likely written by a man or a woman. When the caption was funny more people attributed it to a man, and when it was unfunny they thought a woman wrote it. In other words, men and women are pretty evenly matched on the funny. The problem is, most people already believe women aren’t funny, so no one gives them any credit when they are!
