Are you desperate for a dog?

Before you grab up the cutest puppy at the pound, do a little research. According to Bash Dibra, author of "Your Dream Dog: A Guide to Choosing the Right Dog for You," you need to consider your lifestyle and budget before bringing Fido home. Here are some of his tips:
  • If you have young kids, you'll want a patient dog. Think Labrador, golden retriever, cocker spaniel.
  • If your family is gone most of day, don't get a puppy. They need constant supervision. Instead, pick a breed that's okay alone for 4 or 5 hours. Think basset hound, bulldog, or pug.
  • If you have another pet, larger dogs are more tolerant. Consider a poodle, a retriever, or a German shepherd.
  • And remember, the shorter the dog's hair, the cheaper the upkeep, because they don't need to go to the groomer very often--That means a beagle, pointer, or dachshund.
If you want to go further, and pick the best dog for your family, the book is called "Your Dream Dog: A Guide to Choosing the Right Dog for You" by Bash Dibra.
