If you'd like to save money on grocery shopping, join the club. And head on down to the dollar store! According to
First magazine, dollar stores are a much better bargain these days.
Here's why:
- First, dollar stores used to carry almost-expired food and unheard-of brands, but they've become so popular, major manufacturers are creating $1 dollar versions of their leading products. You may get fewer choices and sizes, but when you compare prices with convenience stores, drugstores and supermarkets, it'll save you a whopping 30 percent on your grocery bill.
- Also, warehouse clubs are great for saving money on giant containers. But do you really want a one-gallon jug of cashews? Remember, dollar stores usually carry packages smaller than regular grocery store sizes, but bigger than trial sizes which tend to be over-priced. For example, a 1.5 ounce trial-size baby powder costs a buck and a quarter at drugstores, but you can get twice as much powder for only a buck at the dollar store!
- And the final dollar store tip: Some of the best buys are party supplies and seasonal decorations. For a buck, you can get $5 dollars worth of balloons, or $30 dollars worth of greeting cards. And the key to scoring on holiday stuff is to hit the dollar store roughly a month before the holiday. Which means - 4th of July stuff should be on premium right now.
I say let's go shopping!
