Want to save money on gas? There’s an app for that! In fact, there are dozens. To help whittle things down, here’s a list of the best apps for finding everything from low gas prices, to the shortest driving routes, to carpool pals, and most of them are free.
- First, to find the cheapest gas, try GasBuddy. It covers all of the U.S. and Canada. The prices are recent, because more than 5 million users input prices from their local stations to qualify for a weekly $250 gas card giveaway. All you have to do is input your ZIP code for a list of the best gas prices in town.
- Even if it’s cheaper, will going to a far-off gas station actually save you money? To find out, try the Bankrate gas calculator. Just plug in your car’s gas tank capacity, and your average gas mileage. Then, input the locations of your local station and the cheaper station – and the prices at each one. It’ll show what - if anything – you’ll save by going out of your way.
- Another money-saver: The ridesharing app Carticipate, which uses your existing social networks to match you with carpooling pals. You simply input where you want to drive, and when you want to go, and the app links you to anybody else who’s on the same schedule.
- One final money-saving app: Route4Me, which maps the fastest or shortest routes, to help you avoid wasted mileage. It’s a subscription service that’s ideal for delivery drivers with multiple stops. Or people whose daily errands take them all around town. For $100 a month, it’ll plan out the most efficient routes for 200 addresses at a time. Or you can plan 25 multiple-stop routes a month for $15.
