Facebook Updating Takes Center Stage At Weddings!

What’s the first thing today’s newlyweds are doing after saying “I do”? According to a new survey, they’re updating Facebook! In fact, in the survey of 500 recently married women, nearly half said they changed their relationship status from “single” to “married” sometime between the wedding ceremony and the reception.

Melissa Barrad is a wedding planner who says she was shocked the first time she saw a bride whip out her cell phone, right after her wedding, to update Facebook. That’s because the intermission between the ceremony and the reception is usually crammed with taking photos. But today, Barrad says the “updating of the status” is so important, that many couples are asking to have it incorporated into the ceremony itself! Even Mark Zuckerberg - the founder of Facebook himself – recently updated his status within minutes of marrying his wife Priscilla Chan. And a growing number of women say their wedding isn’t really “official” until they’ve changed their name on Facebook.

Some experts say the trend is driven by the fact that today’s couples are cutting their wedding guest lists, to save money. So, updating Facebook is an easy way to immediately get the word out to friends and family they can’t see in person. Also, couples know that if they don’t update Facebook, they’re going to be overwhelmed by comments from people, asking things like: “What’s the hold up?” or “Was the wedding called off?”
