Divorce Expos
First, there was the wedding
expo – a one-stop-shop vendor exhibition where you could find everything you
need to put on a wedding……from photographers to custom cake toppers. Well, now
there’s a divorce expo – which offers everything you might need to survive a
divorce and its aftermath, including financial planners and therapists,
attorneys and mediators, and makeover specialists and dating coaches. You can
also find panels offering advice and Q&As, with titles like, “Parenting
Through Divorce,” and “Now That You’re Single Again.”
Supporters say it’s about time there was a one-stop-shop for divorce advice and information. After all, nearly half of all marriages end in divorce – which means, plenty of people are looking for answers. A divorce expo can also help people who are divorcing connect with others in the same boat. Creating a supportive community of people who can help each other transition to their new post-divorce life. And to learn from each others’ experience.
But critics say that divorce expos are just crass commercialism at its worst. Mike McManus is the founder of Marriage Savers, and he says we shouldn’t be trying to make it easier for people to get divorced. We should be providing more tools to help them stay married.
Divorce expos have already been held in New York, Connecticut, Michigan, and Paris – with more in the works.
