Toys can be great   but many of them are incredibly dangerous in the hands of children.

CNN looked at the 18th annual "Trouble in Toyland" report by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, and here are some of the things they came up with-- In 2002, more than 72,000 kids under the age of five needed emergency treatment for toy-related injuries. The worst part is   most of the deaths and injuries could have easily been prevented. Here are the top four toy dangers for children.

  • Choking on small toy parts, balloons and little balls. The report issued warnings for Dora the Explorer bracelets and the Fisher-Price Loving Family Baby Horse. Basically, if a toy fits inside an empty roll of toilet paper, it's small enough to choke a child.
  • Toys with strings can strangle. Beware of Water Blaster Yo-Yos, and Bungee-Roo animals.
  • Some toys can be toxic, including Strawberry Shortcake Scented Nail Polish and Claire's Boutique Makeup Kit.
  • And the #4 danger   overly loud toys can permanently damage hearing. Don't buy kids a Hello Kitty Play Phone or the Learn Through Music system from Fisher-Price. Basically, if it's too loud for you, it's way too loud for a child.
All the toys mentioned are designed for kids older than three, and comply with federal regulations, but they're still dangerous. If you'd like some more information about toys that could injure your children, jump on over to Toy Safety.net.
