The Excuse You've Been Waiting For
Guys here's the excuse you've been waiting your whole life for!
According to the Daily Mail news service, men have a legitimate reason for not listening to their wives! It seems that women's voices are just too difficult for them to hear.
Huh? Well, researchers at the University of Sheffield in the U.K. monitored the brain activity of a group of men while they listened to recordings of both male and female voices. And there were startling differences in the way they processed each!
The guys could easily hear and understand the other men's voices. But when they heard the female voices, they had to decipher them using the part of the brain that processes MUSIC.
Lead researcher Michael Hunter says a female voice is more complex than a man's voice, due to the differences in the size and shape of the vocal chords and larynx. Also, women's voices have more melody to them. This means women have more sound frequencies in their voices, and men have a harder time deciphering them - and really HEARING what a woman is saying.
Hunter says this could also explain why people who have hallucinations usually hear male voices because the brain has an easier time conjuring up a male voice than a female voice.
But that aside - the bottom line is this: The reason men seem to "tune out" the women in their lives is because they actually have trouble tuning them IN.
