Even Babies get the Blues!
That's what the researchers at the University of Oklahoma have found out. They say that children under the age of 3 can suffer from classic signs of depression, such as disruptions in sleeping and eating patters. They've even found that babies can suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder! It seems that zero to 3 is an age when children learn and grow at rapid rates, and can be affected by traumatic experiences. But experts say knowing that this is such a vulnerable period can help parents pay more attention, and give their babies the affection they need to grow up happy-- Constance Weil is a pediatric psychologist at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She says that for babies' brains to develop properly, they need tender loving care and a secure relationship with at least ONE parent. Things like talking to your baby, holding them and singing to them is crucial. When babies don't get this, they can be aggressive, withdrawn or have a low tolerance for frustration and cry a lot. They can also have a hard time adapting to change-- And it's just as bad when they get older--
Experts say that in college, the way you behave with your boyfriend or girlfriend is totally connected to what happened to you in infancy. If you never got attention when you needed it, you might be very insecure - always wondering if your mate really loves you and never fully trusting them. Bottom line: Zero to 3 is a crucial age for children. Making them feel loved and secure during these years will not only keep them from getting depressed, but it'll make them more easy-going as children, and more confident as adults--
