Are Kids Today Too Spoiled?
Our kids are “the most indulged young people in the history of the world.”
That’s a direct quote from Elizabeth Kolbert, a staff writer for The New Yorker. She’s got a lot of people talking lately, with an article about how our kids are too spoiled! For example: She says in other parts of the world, many kids are cooking and cleaning for their family by the age of six. The kids take care of the adults! In our society, most kids need to be nagged by their parents to do even the smallest chore, like making their bed.
Is that a bad thing? A lot of parents in the New Yorker article say “no,” because kids deserve time to be kids. Some parents would rather have their children focus on being happy, and getting good grades, instead of stressing about doing chores. Plus, parents say they have enough to worry about trying to keep their kids healthy and safe, without having to police their kids, too.
Also, parents today want to be their kids’ friend instead of an authority figure. They feel they’ll have a closer relationship that way.
So, is it so bad to spoil kids? Robert MacKenzie is a psychologist who says, “Yes!"
He says kids aren’t mature enough to be in charge of their own lives. So, when parents indulge them every time they want something, kids are less likely to respect the rights, feelings, and boundaries of others. Plus, some experts say spoiled kids are often a sign of bad parents, who aren’t taking the time to teach their kids how to be responsible, productive members of society. That’s why MacKenzie says we’ve created a “me first” generation that believes in putting their own needs before others. Do you agree? Are kids really that spoiled? Weigh in at Facebook.com/JohnTesh.
