Double Duty Foods Will Help You Lose Weight

If you’re trying to lose weight, the key may be to eat more “double duty foods.” Those are basically healthy foods that provide the double benefit of helping your body blast fat, by curbing your appetite enough to make you eat fewer calories each day. So, what are some of those double duty foods? Here’s a list we found in Health magazine:

  • Let’s start with: Oranges. Experts say oranges have the fewest calories of any double duty food, with only 60 calories each. They’re also the highest-ranked fruit on the so-called “satiety-index” – which is a fancy way of saying they’ll keep you feeling full the longest. That’s because oranges are loaded with fiber, which takes a long time to digest, helping you eat less.
  • Eggs. Eggs contain only 80 calories each – so they’re a low calorie choice for breakfast. Plus, eggs are loaded with protein, which your body needs to satisfy hunger. In fact, one study found that eating an egg for breakfast can curb your appetite enough to help you eat 330 fewer calories the rest of the day. Do that every day for a year, and you’ll lose more than 30 pounds!
  • A third double duty food is: Cheese. We’ve talked about cheese being the perfect midday snack, since a slice of cheese contains 76 calories. Recent studies have also shown that goat or feta cheese contains an acid known as CLA, which has been linked to helping the body burn more fat! Cheese that comes from grass-fed animals tends to contain the most CLA.
  • Here’s one more double duty food: Dark chocolate. A recent Danish study found that people who eat dark chocolate tend to eat less at their next meal. Why? Because compounds found in chocolate slow down digestion to a point where you feel full longer. A small square of chocolate - about half the size of a business card – is only 170 calories, but it’ll be enough to curb your cravings for other snacks, which tend to promote packing on the pounds.
