4 Health Myths To Leave Behind

Here are the facts behind 4 health myths that many of us have believed all our lives:

#1: You should see your dentist twice a year. James Bader is a professor of dentistry at the University of North Carolina. He says this advice actually comes from an old toothpaste ad, not the laboratory. People with healthy teeth and gums are fine seeing the dentist annually.

Health myth #2: Don’t eat after 8 p.m. Susan Bowerman is the assistant director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition. She says that people over 60 and anyone who hits the gym after work should eat right before bed. A late, protein-packed meal helps the body synthesize new tissue and prevents age-related muscle loss.

This 3rd health myth affects your budget: Throw out milk when it reaches its expiration date. Stores aren’t allowed to sell milk after the date on the carton……But, it’s probably still good for another week. So, let your nose be your guide. FYI, if you gulp down some sour milk, don’t sweat it. As far as your health’s concerned, it’s the same as eating cheese.

And finally: Feed a cold. Starve a fever. That would be a no. In both cases, eat and drink and then drink some more. That’s according to Dr. Jim sears from the TV show The Doctors. Staying hydrated is the most important thing to do, because we lose a lot of fluid when we’re ill. And unless you’re severely dehydrated or vomiting, you don’t need an electrolyte beverage. Water will do just fine. And, don’t forget that chicken soup contains an amino acid called cysteine that’s been proven to relieve mucus buildup and ease sore throat pain.
