follow these rules from the National Association of Realtors before you sign the final documents.
- Test the water pressure and don't be shy--Flush the toilets, run the sinks and showers and do it simultaneously to make sure there isn't a dramatic temperature change.
- Also look for signs of leakage. Check the basement for mildew, and the ceiling and walls for bubbling, brown spots or repainting.
- Hire a home inspector and a land surveyor. The inspector will examine the house for problems that may affect your safety and the home's resale value. The surveyor will confirm property lines.
- And before you buy a new home visit it in the morning, after school, and on Saturday night. The way a neighborhood seems on a Sunday afternoon can be misleading.
