The Good Doctor's Guide To Cold and Flu

I have some intelligence for your health. Here are the answers to two common questions about cold and flu season. These come from Neil Schachter, author of the book The Good Doctor's Guide To Cold and Flu.

  • Question Number One: Should I get a flu shot? The answer is a resounding YES! Although there are several rumors saying the flu vaccine isn't effective, doctors say it really does prevent you from getting sick. Research shows that people who get flu shots have a lower risk of catching pneumonia, and are less likely to be hospitalized for flu-related reasons. And according to Dr. Aaron E. Glatt, spokesperson for the Infectious Disease Society of America, there's no truth to the rumor that you'll get sick after getting the vaccine. So hurry up and get your shot!
  • And the second question about cold and flu season: If you catch a cold, what can you eat to feel better? If you feel ill, start by downing a glass of orange juice. Studies show that vitamin C may shorten the duration of a cold. You should also munch on bananas and turkey. These foods help maintain the health of your organs   so they can keep making infection-fighting white blood cells. And finally, you should have an apple or some cranberries. These foods contain flavanoids, which can reduce inflammation and strengthen your immune system.
So once again, the foods you need to eat to help get rid of a cold are: orange juice, turkey, bananas, apples, and cranberries.
