Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

Why is it that the slightest funny noise in a car sends most guys straight to the mechanic? However, if a mysterious ache or pain develops in their own body, most guys ignore it? Here’s a new list of health symptoms you should never ignore – especially if you’re a man. These come from Rodale publishing.

  • Never ignore leg swelling. Sudden fluid build-up in the feet, ankles or legs is known as “edema.” While edema can usually be treated with medication, doctors say that swelling could be your first warning sign of heart, kidney or liver disease! That’s why it’s important for a doctor to determine the real cause for leg swelling, so they can choose the correct treatment.
  • Another symptom you should never ignore: Unintended weight loss. If your pants suddenly feel too loose, even though you haven’t changed your diet and exercise routine, that’s a serious red flag. It could be a sign of an overactive thyroid gland or it could be one of the first hints of cancer! Get checked out immediately.
  • A 3rd symptom to never ignore: Shortness of breath. We’re not talking about feeling out-of-breath after a workout. Instead, if you find yourself gasping for air after walking around the block, or climbing a flight of stairs, that’s a sign that your heart’s becoming weak due to congestive heart failure.
  • Another symptom guys should especially not ignore: Changes in bathroom habits. Needing to “go” more than normal, or having difficulty peeing, are two of the most common signs of an enlarged prostate. In most cases, that’s not life-threatening – because the prostrate naturally grows as men age. However, changes in urination could also suggest prostrate cancer, which is life threatening! Your doctor can tell the difference between the two with a simple physical exam and blood test.
