Let's be honest-When you're plopped in front of the television watching a movie marathon, you're usually not snacking on anything too healthy. But sitting around and stuffing your face with junk food isn't good for your waistline! So, I have in my hand a healthy snack you can eat the next time you decide to make it a 'Blockbuster Night'This comes from Registered Dietician Elizabeth Ward, and chef George Stella:
- The first part of your healthy snack: a grilled cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread. As long as you don't fry it in 2 pounds of butter, grilled cheese is actually a healthy snack because it contains a lot of good nutrients. The cheese is full of calcium, which helps keep your bones and muscles strong. And whole wheat bread contains B vitamins, which energizes your body. Whole wheat bread is also full of folic acid, which helps keep blood cells healthy and arteries clear. If you want to add extra health benefits to your sandwich, sprinkle some thyme on your cheese before grilling the sandwich. The spice contains a chemical called thymol, which helps wipe out the germs in your mouth that cause gum infections.
- The next part of your snack: apple slices. Apples contain anti-oxidants, which help slow your body's aging process. And apple peels contain a plant compound called quercetin, which helps relieve allergy symptoms. Studies also show that quercetin may play a role in preventing lung and prostate cancer.
- And the final part of your healthy snack: a cup of green tea. Researchers have found that the anti-oxidants in green tea help prevent certain types of cancer, and they also help prevent blood clots in your body. And the formation of blood clots in your body is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke.
So, the next time you plop yourself in front of the TV and you want a snack, make yourself a grilled cheese sandwich, cut up an apple, and brew a cup of green tea. All that food only has 412 calories Versus a 13-ounce bag of Doritos, which has 1,820 calories.
