Relieve the Most Common Eye Irritations

If you’ve got a problem with your eyes, we’ve got a solution. Here’s how to relieve the most common eye irritations courtesy of Rodale Publishing and Dr. Monica L. Monica from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. First, stop rubbing your eyes! That only irritates them more and can spread germs to your glands. Instead do this:

  • If your vision is blurry: That means your eyes are too dry. Place your computer monitor so you’re looking slightly down at it. Your eyes won’t open as wide, so they won’t be exposed to as much cornea-drying air.
  • If you have double vision, that means your eyes are tired. To boost their endurance, hold a pencil vertically and focus on the writing on its side as you move it closer to your eyes. Do that 10 times daily for two weeks.
  • What if your eyelid is swollen? Dr. Monica says a gland in your eyelid is clogged with dirt and oil. So do this: Add a little bit of baby shampoo to a cup of warm water and dip a washcloth in the solution. Wipe your eyelid twice a day.
  • One last eye problem and solution? If you’ve got itchy eyes, it means allergens have invaded your eyes. So dampen a washcloth in cold water and wipe them. Then use the same cloth as a compress to help soothe irritated blood vessels. Of course, if any of the problems we’ve mention are extreme, out of the ordinary for you, chronic, or don’t go away – get to an ophthalmologist.
