And safety experts are outraged because they say that window falls are extremely preventable.
So, why do they still keep happening? Dr. Gary Smith heads the Center for Injury Research and Policy. He says a lot of parents assume their kid’s only at risk of falling out of a window if they live in a high-rise apartment. So, they don’t even think about securing windows in their house. But experts say it doesn’t matter if kids are in a small house or a skyscraper, statistics show that the majority of kids fall through 2nd floor windows no matter what type of building it is.
So, parents, how do you protect your kid from window falls? Install metal mesh window guards on every 2nd story and higher window in your home. In fact, it could be the law. A growing number of cities now require it. For example, New York requires all apartment buildings to install guards on windows in households with kids under age 11.
