Mad Cow disease!!

Should we panic or not? Well, not really--According to the Chicago Sun-Times, you've got, literally, a 1-in-a-million chance of eating contaminated beef and getting mad cow disease. You have a better chance of winning the lottery and getting struck by lightning on the same day-- But if you're worried, here are some guidelines-- The parts of the cow you never want to eat are the brain, spinal column, nervous system and internal organs. You also might want to avoid roasts or steaks with bones in them. If you really want a hamburger, don't buy ground beef   get a sirloin steak or chuck roast, and have the butcher grind it for you--
Again, you don't really have to worry about Mad Cow Disease, but just so you know, there's beef in a lot of other things that might not seem so obvious--
  • If you love pizza, know this--Pepperoni is made from beef and assorted other ingredients, but beef is the main one. And pepperoni is America's favorite pizza topping   36 percent of all pizzas sold have pepperoni on top--
  • Beef shows up in hot dogs and baloney, but you'll have to read the label- Some hot dogs and luncheon meats are made from turkey and pork--
  • Sausage occasionally has beef in it, but again, you'll have to read the label. Sausage can be made from pork, lamb, chicken or duck   but the casings are made from intestines--Find out which animal those casings came from if you're worried--
  • And here's a beef by-product you may not have thought of: Jell-o. There's no actual beef in Jell-o, but gelatin, the reason Jell-o gets hard, is made from the boiled bones, skins and tendons of cows--
So, if you want to avoid beef in the foods you eat, skip pepperoni, read the labels when you buy hot dogs, baloney and sausage, and avoid Jell-o-- And now you know   thanks to the folks at the Chicago Sun-Times.
