Can you guess the number #1 office décor problem?
And those lights aren't just ugly. The Wall Street Journal says that for some office workers, they can cause migraines, eyestrain, and even stress! But most businesses love fluorescent lighting because it's cheap and efficient.
Natural light, however, is much better for you and it feels better. If you aren't lucky enough to have a window in your office, experts say to get some floor lamps and desk lamps, even if you have to pay for them yourself.
But a smart company would foot the bill for natural lighting. One study found that workers performed better when they were exposed to natural light. Having a window with a view of greenery improved mental function up to 25 percent. And experts say a worker's physical comfort is also boosted by natural light which means fewer sick days and insurance bills.
But if Corporate's not budging, here are a few tips for lighting your office:
- Light the room unevenly. Uniform lighting can cause eye fatigue and strain.
- Make sure you have an adjustable light source close to your work area one you can dim or make really bright.
- And make sure to illuminate the whole room not just your immediate work area. A large contrast between the bright computer screen and a dark work area will cause eye strain.
