Are you doing Atkins? South Beach? Or The Zone?

They're all low-carb diets, and they're all the rage. Their books are number 1 on the bestsellers' list. But these diets do more than sell books. They're sending sales of snacks like pork rinds and beef jerky through the roof. But just because they're low on carbs, does that mean they're good for you? Let's check it out-- Pork rinds are popular because they're one of the few crunchy snacks with almost zero carbs--And when you're going low-carb there's not a lot to satisfy that urge to crunch. Pork Rinds are made by separating the inner layer of skin from the outer hide of the pig. The hide is saved to make leather. The inner skin is the edible part, which is smoked, baked, and then deep fried--Nutritionally, these things are a nightmare. They're all fat   make that deep-fried fat - plus 2-1/2 times more salt than potato chips. On the good side, they deliver a protein punch, which is why sales have risen 25 percent in two years-- What about the other low-carb snack of choice - beef jerky? It's made by soaking strips of meat or ground beef in salt water, then smoking them.
It has about the same carbs, calories and fat as pork rinds--But beef jerky has over seven times more salt than potato chips! But thanks to the low-carb trend, sales of beef jerky have more than doubled in the last two years. Manufacturers don't see it slowing down anytime soon, with the South Beach diet and Atkins still on the bestsellers' list. But at least now you know what you're putting in your mouth.
