Your Workout Routines Are Doing More Harm Than Good
So, you’re exercising every day. That’s great, but did you know that some of your favorite workout routines could be doing more harm than good? Here’s a list of common fitness mistakes you should avoid, according to health experts at ABC News:
- Unhealthy routine #1: You walk instead of run. Neal Pire is a sports medicine expert who says many people take the “slow-and-steady” approach to working out, because you can burn fat without getting hurt. Pire says you’ll burn more fat overall if you push the intensity! What’s more, you’ll actually lower your risk of injury if you alternate your low-impact workouts with bursts of hard cardio – like running.
- Unhealthy routine #2 : You quench every workout with a sports drink. Experts say being active shouldn’t require a special drink! In fact, most sports drinks are no better for you than a soft drink, because they’re loaded with sugar and calories that’ll make it harder for you to lose weight. You’re much better off sticking to plain water when exercising.
- Unhealthy routine #3 : Rewarding yourself with a snack. Experts call this the “burn to earn” mentality. That’s where you tell yourself that an hour on the treadmill gives you the right to eat a doughnut at work. Experts say that kind of thinking suggests your food cravings are less about satisfying hunger, and more about an addiction to eating! The reality is that constantly overindulging will make it impossible to lose weight through exercise alone.
- Unhealthy routine #4: Stretching BEFORE you exercise. Several new studies have shown that stretching cold muscles can actually decrease power and endurance, and increase your risk of strains and injuries. That means you’ll have to work harder to get the full health benefits of a workout. So, try saving your toe-touching ritual for the end of your workout, when your muscles are warm and more flexible.
