The Happiness Diet

The food you eat is making you fat and depressed. That’s the word from a new diet book by Dr. Drew Ramsey, a clinical psychologist from Columbia University, and Tyler Graham a health editor.

The book is called “The Happiness Diet.” It says that even though we’re eating too much, the over-processed food we’re stuffing down is so devoid of nutrients that we’re practically malnourished! And, because we’re under nourishing our brain, that’s leading to a range of mental health problems.

According to Graham and Ramsey the food we find in the middle aisles at the grocery store is loaded with extra sugars, refined carbs, bad-for-you fats and lots of salt. It’s all basically empty calories that send your blood sugar into overdrive and can have a major impact on your hormones and stress levels. That’s why they say the best thing we can do for our physical and mental health is start eating real food again! That means whole-grains and leafy greens that are jam-packed with linoleac acid (linn-o-lee-ick), a natural mood booster.

They also recommend grass-fed meat and poultry, because pasture-raised animals have higher levels of heart and brain-healthy Omega-3 fats.

Now, the one thing people always say when experts tell them to start eating whole foods is it’s too expensive. Graham and Ramsey say that’s the biggest myth out there. They say instead of buying meat at the grocery store, go in with a bunch of friends and buy an entire animal straight from a farm and freeze it. It’s a lot cheaper and a side of beef can fit into a 10 cubic foot freezer and it’ll be good for a year. Interested? Try these sites: LocalHarvest.org, EatWild.com, and GrassOrganic.com.
