The Fattening Foods of Fall Can Ruin Your Diet

Here’s a scary statistic: The average person packs on nine pounds between Halloween and Christmas! So if you don’t want to destroy your diet this fall, here are a few fat bombs you should avoid, from WebMD:

  • Leftover Halloween candy. 90% of parents say they sneak candy from their child’s Halloween goody bag. If you eat just four bite-size candy bars, you’re consuming 320 calories! There are fewer calories in a McDonald’s cheeseburger! So if you’ve got to have candy, reach for a Tootsie Pop: One pop is only 60 calories. Since it takes a while to finish a lollipop, you’re less likely to pig out and eat a bunch of them.
  • Pumpkin baked goods. This time of year, pumpkin muffins, donuts, and cakes are everywhere. Yes, pumpkin is good for you – but when it’s combined with butter and sugar, not so much. For example, Krispy Kreme’s Pumpkin Spice Donut contains 300 calories. It’d take about an hour of brisk walking to burn that off! Panera Bread’s pumpkin muffin has over 500 calories. To burn one of those off, you’d have to rake leaves for about an hour-and-a-half! So instead, go for smaller versions. For example, instead of ordering the whole pumpkin muffin at Panera Bread, order the pumpkin “muffie” instead – it’s just the top of a muffin. Do this, and you’ll cut the number of calories you eat in HALF. For about a third of the calories, order two Pumpkin Spice donut holes from Krispy Kreme - instead of the donut.
  • Popcorn balls. Popcorn can be a nutritious snack, but when you add syrup, it becomes a calorie-laden, gooey artery-clogger. In fact, some popcorn balls can contain over 250 calories! So stick with plain ol’ air-popped popcorn: A cup is only 25 calories. Just skip the butter topping.
  • Since fall means cooler weather, watch out for fattening hot beverages! A large Mocha Spice Latte from Dunkin’ Donuts will set you back 450 calories – the same amount as a medium order of Burger King onion rings! The fix? Order a medium Latte Light from Dunkin’ Donuts – and sprinkle a little cinnamon on top. You’ll save yourself about 300 calories.
