Celebrities May Look Great, but They're Not Always an Image of Health

You may want to look like Gwyneth Paltrow on the outside, but you don’t want to look like her on the inside. According to ABC News, Gwyneth admits that her doctors told her she has the lowest Vitamin D levels they’ve ever seen! At age 37, that’s a big reason she’s been diagnosed with osteopenia, a precursor to the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition usually found in older women. In younger women like Gwyneth Paltrow, a diagnosis of osteopenia, or lower bone mass, could be due to eating disorders, crazy diets, excessive exercise, or other conditions that affect calcium intake.

In Paltrow’s case, doctors blame excessive exercise and her diet, which is deficient of Vitamin D. Let’s first talk about her diet. Paltrow has been following a macrobiotic diet of mostly vegetables, grains, soup and fish for more than a decade. Doctors aren’t crazy about this diet because it’s meat-free and dairy-free, which means it eliminates entire food groups – and entire nutrients.

Paltrow also admits she fasts and detoxes a few times a year. The Master Cleanse is one of the more extreme fasts she does. That’s the popular diet where you ingest nothing but a mixture of lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper for 10 days. The Master Cleanse claims to eliminate toxins and congestion that have built up in the body. However, your body is already programmed to do that on its own. The Master Cleanse also lacks nutrients like protein, calcium, iron and zinc.

Now let’s talk about Paltrow’s workouts. In 2008, Paltrow told Oprah she works out six days a week, for hours at a time, but experts say you only need two-and-a-half hours of moderate aerobic exercise a week. Paltrow’s getting more than double that amount in a week!

Doctors say the news of Paltrow’s diagnosis should come as a lesson to young girls. Dr. Stephen Honig is the director of Osteoporosis research at NYU. He’s got this message for teen girls: Drink milk, exercise, don’t smoke, no crazy fad diets, and keep your body weight where it should be. Staying healthy shouldn’t be an extreme lifestyle.
