Technology Is Changing The Food We Eat
What will we be eating 25 years from now? Well, things are changing, and according to the experts, technology will be affecting a lot of the foods we eat.
For example, in 25 years, meat will be grown in a lab, instead of coming from animals. Dr. Nicholas Genovese is an Animal Science expert at the University of Missouri and he predicts that a lot of companies will be growing cloned cells from the best quality cows, goats and chickens. And since the facilities will be as clean as laboratories, you won’t have to worry about barnyard contamination, antibiotics, or animal-cruelty.
What else will our food be like in 25 years? We’ll have produce that can grow incredibly quickly, like overnight. Nutrition expert Betsy Ramirez says that with genetically-modified seeds, you’ll literally be able to plant a seed, water it, and wake up to delicious fresh produce the next day.
Another prediction: We’ll be more connected to our food sources. For example, you’ll be able to scan the barcode on a box of eggs, and see photos of the chickens that laid those eggs. Or you could scan a container of yogurt, and see a live video stream of the local factory making that brand of yogurt.
But here’s the most disturbing fact: If we don’t change our eating habits now, most of us will be obese within 12 years. In fact, according to the journal Obesity, by the year 2025, fewer than one-third of the population will be normal-weight. Which means, more of us will be facing debilitating diseases, like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Which is all the more reason to eat right, starting now.
