Social Media Flights
If you’re flying on the Dutch airline KLM, you’re won’t be flying blind anymore! The company is rolling out what they’re calling a “Social Seating policy.” The policy allows passengers to check out other passengers' Facebook and Linked In profiles, so they can choose their seats based on who they have the most in common with. Basically, passengers post a link their social media profiles with their check-in information, allowing others to see who they are and choose to sit next to them.
KLM says social seating is still in the development phase, and they won’t reveal exactly how it works, but they’re not the first company in the airline industry to use social media. One short-lived venture called Air-Troductions was basically an in-flight, online dating service, and Malaysia Airlines has a facebook app that lets you to see if any of your friends are on the same flight. Now, if you’re worried about privacy, don’t be. KLM says the social seating is totally voluntary and passengers will have to opt in instead of opt out.
