Smartphone Dangers

Are you addicted to your Smartphone? According to a poll by The Chicago Tribune, 40% of iPhone owners would rather stop brushing their teeth than give up their phones. That sort of devotion has implications that go far beyond oral hygiene. Here are other ways your Smartphone is hurting you:

#1: You’re getting less sleep. Sleep expert Dr. Rubin Naiman says that the light emitted by smartphones prevents your body from producing the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin. And not getting enough sleep has been linked to obesity, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer.

Another smartphone danger: Automobile accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 20% of crashes resulting in injury or death are caused by distracted driving. So, it's no surprise that the University of Utah found that texting behind the wheel is more dangerous than driving drunk.

Finally: Smartphones make us dumb. MIT neurologist Dr. Earl Miller says that people who try to multitask with their phone while doing other tasks see a drop in productivity. One that’s equivalent to losing 10 IQ points.
