Math From Comic Books
Good news, kids: The latest way to learn math and science is to read a comic book.
Recently, a San Francisco publisher called No Starch Press put out a new line of comic books based in the Japanese “manga” art style, which is the style “Pokemon” and “Hello Kitty” are in. But these comic books aren’t about superheros, they’re about math and science.
Believe it or not, a study published in the International Journal of the Humanities found that comics can be incredibly effective at teaching complex subjects to kids, like algebra, calculus, biochemistry, and even the theory of relativity! That’s because comics deliver information in a way that’s shorter, and makes a stronger impression on kids, than conventional textbooks.
Think about it: Kids love to read comics and they’re easily drawn in by manga’s unique combination of text and graphics. Also, studies show that comics works just as well for girls as for boys, which is important because girls tend to lag behind boys when it comes to interest in math and science. Researchers say that’s crucial, because the younger kids are when they learn math and science, the better they do.
That’s why the Japanese market has been using comics to teach complex subjects for many years snd why your next math lesson could very well come from a comic book.
