Video Chat Has Resulted In A Rise In Chin-Related Cosmetic Surgery

Remember the good ol’ days – when you could talk to someone on the phone while wearing sweats, with your hair sticking straight up? And no one would be the wiser? Well, nowadays, we have to be camera ready all the time! Thanks to the iphone face-time feature, skype, instragram, and twit-pics – every day is a photo shoot waiting to happen!

And some say, all that screen time is making us hyper aware of our physical flaws and driving demand for plastic surgery!

Erik Deckers is the author of “Branding Yourself: How To Use Social Media to Reinvent Yourself.’ And he says part of the problem is the angle of the camera. If you’re doing a video chat on your phone – you’re probably holding it at chest-level. So we’re looking down and that creates a little pooch under the chin, or highlights the sagging skin under the jaw.

And the cosmetics community has responded in a big way. The hottest surgical fix, that’s come as a result of our camera-ready technology, is the chin implant. They’ve exploded in popularity – going up 71% since 2010, hot on the heels of the implant is chin liposuction.

Who’s going in for the most chin-related procedures? Not grandma or grandpa with their turkey-necks. It’s women between the ages of 20 and 35 – the ones most likely to be video chatting!

One plastic surgeon says his patients will come in and say, “I never noticed this when I looked in the mirror – it was only when I saw myself on Facebook or my iPhone!”

So what can you do, short of scheduling surgery? You could get Face Lift Tape for $25 at the drug store. You stick adhesive pads on the side of your face – and a wire hidden in your hair tugs the skin back. Or you could simply hold the phone above eye level – or prop your computer up on some books. The chin sag will disappear – for free.
