Better Lifestyle Choices For Better Chances Against Cancer

Making smart lifestyle choices can greatly reduce your risk of getting cancer over your lifetime. That’s the upshot of years of study by leading oncologist Dr. David Agus. He says a good cancer-prevention strategy starts with eating, sleeping and exercising on a regular schedule, even on weekends. Here are some of his other suggestions:

First: Wear comfortable shoes. High heels and too-tight shoes can cause swelling, and limit your movement. Raising your risk for chronic inflammation, which has been shown to impact everything from cancer to Alzheimer’s. But wearing comfortable shoes encourages you to move more, and can improve your long-term health.

Another anti-cancer tip: Get an annual flu shot. Having the flu triggers massive body-wide inflammation, which can overload your immune system and diminish your body’s ability to fight other diseases, like cancer. And you need a new flu shot every year, because the vaccine changes according to the kind of flu bugs that are making the rounds.

Also: Once a year, write down all the drugs you’re taking – prescription and otherwise and discuss them with your doctor. Your health is a constantly-moving target, and your needs can change drastically. So, go over the list of drugs with your doctor, and see if you can stop taking even a few of them.

Finally: Think of your doctor as a partner in your healthcare. Ask what they do to stay current on the latest scientific information. If you’re not willing to discuss every problem and symptom with your doctor, it’s time to find a new one.
