Researchers at the University of Stanford tested the brains of men and women while they looked at a series of cartoons. And here's what they found:
Women tended to analyze jokes more deeply. For the most part, they didn't expect any jokes to be funny. But when they were humorous, their brain activity showed the women felt especially pleased and rewarded.
But men were less discriminating and always expected jokes to be funny which meant they actually found more things funny, and were much easier to please.
The researchers also found that women tend to like narrative jokes the kind that tell a story. While men are really drawn to one-liners, and physical, slapstick humor which may explain why all your uncles, brothers, and sons really like simple poke-in-the-eye humor, like The Three Stooges and America's Funniest Home Videos.
