This is Moxie – a 13-year-old retriever, who spent 8 days at Ground Zero following the attacks on 9/11/2001. At the time, Moxie was only 2-years-old, and helped first responders search for survivors in the rubble. She’s just one of over a hundred dogs that were on the scene, working side by side with the rescue crews.
Just like their human handlers, these dogs worked days on end without taking a break. And although over 100 dogs helped – only a few are still alive today. Some of them, like Moxie, were chronicled by photographer Charlotte Dumas a decade after the attacks in her book "Retrieved." Today, we’re honoring these four-legged heroes, as well as the human heroes.
