Jet lag! If it seems the older you get, the harder it is on you, you may be right. That’s the lowdown from HealthDay News. In fact, researchers at the University of Virginia found that jet lag is so hard on older mice, it actually shortens their lifespan! So, what does that have to do with you? Well, humans and mice set their sleep patterns by light. So, we’re both affected negatively by things like jet lag and being awake at irregular times, like working the overnight, graveyard shift.

Basically, the mice that died during the study were subjected to time adjustments that moved them 6 hours ahead once a week. The equivalent of a New York-to-Europe flight. The research, published in the journal Current Biology, chalked up the mice’s early demise to a lack of sleep, which caused their immune systems to falter. But don’t cancel your business trip to London, or your romantic vacation to Spain! Just make sure to eat right and get plenty of sleep before your trip. And schedule in time to recover from jet lag after your flight. Maybe an extra day when you arrive, and another when you get back.
